This post is dedicated to XML files that are being converted to FCPXML format. FCPXML is a new format for Final Cut Pro X, which was released in mid-2011. All current major video editing programs support XML, so if you have an old video editing program that doesn’t yet support FCPXML, this may be the solution to your problem! Additionally, Mac OS X provides basic XML conversion functionality. What’s more? The blog post will cover what you need in order to convert your file into the shape of an XML file and how to store it in a project folder within Final Cut Pro X. Before we start converting, you need to have a working knowledge of XML and familiarity with Xcode. However, if you have basic knowledge of XML, this shouldn’t be too hard, as I’ll be using a simple FCPXML file created in a last-minute contest in order to demonstrate how to convert it. What is an XML file? This video shows clearly how the format works. But I'll list the basics here: 1. It can contain any type of data. 2. Each node within the XML structure can have attributes attached to them that specify their content and style designations (like font size). 3. There is a root element called the Document, which is where all the data in the document is stored. 4. Data within a particular element can have child elements, which contain data as well. 5. More complex documents can have nested elements and attributes as well, depending on how complicated it may be. It's a pain to download and install an entire software package just for a simple conversion task? I agree... But don't worry! If you're using Final Cut Pro X 10 or below, this process will require little to no additional software installation. I'll show how to convert both video files and audio files using FCP X's built-in XML conversion feature. First, you need to open the XML file in Xcode, which will allow you to view it within the program. Then select the "View" option up at the top-left corner of your screen (middle icon). There you'll see a list that says "Projects". Click on that and then click on the folder that says "Final Cut Pro X". You can now click on your XML file within the list of folders. This will allow you to view your XML file within Final Cut Pro X (if it’s still in its original format). In order to convert your XML file into an FCPXML format, you'll need to do a few basic things. First, select the "File" option at the top-right corner of your screen (the second icon from the left) and then click on "Import" within the drop-down menu. This will bring up a list of all possible file types that can be imported into Final Cut Pro X, such as QuickTime iMovie (and AVI). Scroll down until you see "Final Cut Pro XML (*.XML)" and click on it. You will now be presented with a menu that says "Import". eccc085e13
